Sebastopol: The Perfect Setting for an Authentic Israeli Brunch
The beautiful Sonoma County, especially the fields of Sebastopol, with its colors, aroma, and weather, makes us feel oddly at home.
It reminds us of Israel, where we all spent our childhood, even though it’s thousands of miles away and seems a world apart. Sebastopol would be the perfect location for an Israeli brunch. Israel is world-famous for its elaborate breakfasts
The Origins of the Israeli Breakfast
The story of these breakfasts begins in the late 1940s, around the time of Israel's establishment as a state, with residents of the kibbutz. In Hebrew, "kibbutz" means "gathering." Kibbutzim are intentional communities traditionally based around agriculture, located throughout Israel. From the beginning, the kibbutznikim (residents of the kibbutz) ate their meals in a communal dining hall. It was common for residents to have a light snack early in the morning, work in the fields for several hours, and then return to the dining hall for a hearty mid-morning buffet meal, similar to brunch. By the 1950s, Israeli hotels began promoting the "Israeli breakfast" in a style reminiscent of the kibbutz meals.
